A POLICEMAN who smashed into two pedestrians while driving at more than 70mph has been banned from driving for six months and fined £800.

Kevin Foster was driving two men to Wakefield last September when he crashed into Ian and Claire Braithwaite, causing serious injuries to both, Wakefield Magistrates Court was told yesterday.

Prosecutor John Davison said the "very tragic accident" occurred just after midnight when Foster, 39, who is based in Barnsley, was driving along the A61 near Staincross and swerved to avoid a parked West Yorkshire police car.

Foster, who lives in Wakefield, pleaded guilty and idefence solicitor Tom Nutter said: "This is not a case where there has been a wanton disregard for the laws of the land".

He passed on Foster's heartfelt sympathies.
