A councillor battling cancer says his busy new job is helping him focus away from his illness.

Coun Jimmy Rae is undergoing chemotherapy treatment as he takes on his new role as vice-chair of the South Yorkshire Pensions Authority.

Coun Rae, deputy leader of Barnsley Council, said: “This is an important role and I am working with an excellent group of officers and members on the Pensions Authority.

“I took over from my predecessor, John ‘Inky’ Thompson, a month ago and am really enjoying the challenge. I find that the workload keeps me busy and helps to keep my focus away from illness and the chemotherapy.”

Coun Rae has been battling cancer for 16 months and has undergone a series of operations and is currently undergoing his second course of chemotherapy. He wa married in March ahead of the chemotherapy and is actively involved in fundraising activities for Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield and Cancer Research.
