ARMED police have evacuated Barnsley interchange amid speculation that a suspicious package has been found.

Security guards helped clear both the bus and train stations and were shouting to passengers that there was a "dangerous incident".

The drama started shortly before 5pm and officers put in place an exclusion zone around the interchange.

One woman, who was inside the bus station, said six armed officers arrived and told them to get out. They also cleared the train platforms.

Scores of passengers have been forced to delay their journeys and are waiting on Eldon Street, near the Parkway cinema.

Buses and trains were stopped, buses have been re-routed to Market Hill.

One eye-witness said she saw a man being driven at speed away from the scene in a police car.
