A FIREWORK bomb attached to a brick has been used in a suspected arson attack on a house in Staincross.

Fire fighters with breathing apparatus worked for two hours to fight the blaze and ventilate the house.

It was reported to police as an arson attack and the Chronicle understands a brick with a firework bomb attached was used to break a window; it was then ignited and thrown inside causing an explosion in the kitchen.

Neighbours told the Chronicle they were woken by a series of loud bangs in the early hours and described the scene as pandemonium.

One resident added:"When i looked outside on the street I saw lots of smoke and not long after there were fire crews and police everywhere.

"It looks like it's done some right damage to the house and car though; there was smoke billowing out everywhere and it smelt like a cannon had gone off because of the gun powder. It's a huge relief no one was seriously hurt."

Fire officers told the Chronicle a couple were in the house at the time of the attack, a 33-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman, but both managed to escape uninjured.

Police are investigating and treating the incident as suspicious.
