A SELF-CONFESSED former boy racer who made a miraculous recovery following a serious car accident is now teaching young drivers about the perils of speeding.
David Chappell, 22, of Nether End Farm, Denby Dale, suffered horrific brain injuries after the crash in June 2005 and was given a five per cent chance of survival.
His car landed upside down with David's head going through the sun roof. He was rushed to Barnsley hospital where his parents were told he only had a slim chance of living and if he did he would be wheelchair bound and need to be fed through a tube.
But after being transferred to Leeds General Infirmary he began to improve. Following three years of rehabilitation former mechanic David is now trying to stop others making the same mistake he did.
He goes into schools and colleges and shows teenagers pictures of the crash and talks to them about how his injuries have affected his life.
David, who works on the family farm, said: "I have been lucky and if I save just one more life by giving these talks then it's worth it. So many young drivers get too confident and cocky, I would back government plans to make tests harder to pass."
