A splendid old photograph taken in front of the Travellers Rest, Intake Lane, Pogmoor, has been submitted to Memories.

It dates from 1951 or 1952 when the landlord was William Winterbottom. It is of a happy group of men, women and children and includes back row: Wilf Chatterton, Tommy Wilmot, Jimmy Braithwaite, Tommy Peake, Herbert Porter and Albert Peake.

Middle row: Frank Wilmot, Charlie Collier, Joe Beevers, Lucy Mather, Bill Winter.

Front row: Bill Palethorpe, Freddie Jones, Ned Gledhill, Pat Porter, Bill Croft. The little boy seated at the front is Keith Winterbottom.

The photograph was loaned by the present landlord, Terry Unwin. He believes the pub is around 120 years old. During that time there have been 20 to 30 landlords, several of whom stayed only at the pub as licensee for one year.

"The picture was given to me by the late George Butcher who lived in Intake Lane and I know he would be delighted to know that it had appeared in the Chronicle," said Mr Unwin.

William Winterbottom was the landlord between 1949 and 1963. His name is seen on a wooden plaque under the name of the pub at the front of the building. It states he was allowed to retail "Beer, Ale & Stout and Tobacco."

The first recorded landlord was George Palfreyman who was there for five years between 1864 and 1889. He was followed by Richard Bostwick who was there for only one year from 1889 to 1890. John Murfin was "mine host" in 1912 when Barnsley FC won the FA Cup by beating West Bromwich Albion 1-0 in a replay at Bramall Lane.

Imagine the atmosphere in the pub when the Reds' fans returned from their trek home from Sheffield to celebrate this very special day in the club's history. Mr Murfin stayed at the pub until 1926. He was succeeded by Harold Robinson (1926-1927) who, in turn, was followed by Henry Jackson (1927-1928).

Do any of our readers recognise any of the people on the photograph? Who is the man on the front row nursing his pet dog or the gentleman holding the baby? Any information, please, to Kath Parkin, Barnsley Chronicle, Editorial Department, 47, Church Street, Barnsley.
