A SOLDIER who drives armoured vehicles was told he could not get car insurance because his job was too dangerous.

Lance Corporal Joe Meecham returned to a hero's reception in Chevet Rise, Royston, on Monday after serving six months in Afghanistan.

But the 21-year-old was left reeling when insurers Auto Direct said it would not cover the car he sold to his mum when he was deployed.

He said: "We go out on patrols in northern Helmand which is one of the worst, most dangerous places in the green zone. Then mum said they wouldn't insure me because I was a tank driver, it's unbelievable.

Auto Direct has now taken a u-turn and blamed the mistake on underwriters HSBC.

Mum Joanne, 45, said she was still furious with the initial decision to refuse him on the group ten car.

"I think it is awful when he's going out there and putting his life in danger for another country. To come home and get told they won't insure him because of his occupation is diabolical. I know it looks like a sports car but it's cheaper to insure than our Volvo."
