MOTORISTS faced treacherous driving conditions across the Royston district this week as the worst snowfall in 18 years caused havoc on the roads.

The arctic conditions caused about 14 accidents in Royston and surrounding areas, as about ten inches of the white stuff fell across Barnsley and temperatures dropped to -5 degrees Celsius in some areas.

Almost every school in Cudworth, Carlton, Royston, Grimethorpe, Brierley and Shafton was forced to close at the start of the week.

Out of 12 primary schools and two high schools, only Ladywood Primary remained open. As the snow returned yesterday, only Carlton Primary, Ladywood Primary and Meadstead Primary were open.

But the scores of delighted children were out sledging and building snowmen and having snowball fights in parks and gardens.
