MORE than 70 people turned up to a 20th birthday party last weekend, bearing cards, presents and poems - for a car.

The 'birthday girl' was a Ford Escort XR3i cabriolet. It is Gayner Greenwood's pride and joy and has kept her safe - and stylish - on the roads for two decades.

With that in mind, Gayner, of Wakefield Road, threw a birthday party on March 1 for the car - nicknamed Amy Thyst (it's Amethyst in colour - get it?).

To celebrate their time together she hired the Limes golf club in Staincross but told the Chronicle it was her granddaughter who came up with the idea.

She added: "It started out as a bit of fun because this is my dream car. I always wanted a cabriolet and when i saw this I knew i had to have it. Twenty years on and, touch wood, she hasn't failed me yet.

"But it was my granddaughter Rebecca who begged me to throw a party and the whole thing snowballed from there."
