OAKWELL is set to be the first EFL stadium to introduce extra Covid-19 checks for fans under the government’s new Plan B measures.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced this week that, from Wednesday, the NHS Covid pass will be required for entry to any outdoor event with more than 10,000 people in attendance. The average attendance at Oakwell this season is more than 13,000. The Covid pass requires proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test.
Barnsley are due to play West Bromwich Albion on Friday of next week so would be the first Championship club to host a game under the Plan B rules.
The new government measures are in response to the new ‘Omicron’ variant of Covid-19, of which there are now hundreds of known cases in the UK.
A Barnsley statement read: “The club are awaiting confirmation from relevant authorities on what exact measures will be in place for supporters attending Oakwell.
“We will provide regular updates as and when we receive information from governing bodies. With mandatory changes enforced from December 15, it’s likely that conditions of entry will impact our Sky Bet Championship fixture against West Bromwich Albion on Friday December 17.”
