THE 35th Wath Festival is underway with a host of musical events planned for the Bank Holiday weekend.

Last night and Wednesday evening saw around 100 local school children kick start the proceedings at Wath Montgomery Hall by appearing in the Eric Sampson concerts.

Tonight 90s' chart toppers Chumbawumba will be headlining an evening of music at Montgomery Hall and tomorrow the activities move into the town centre with a procession from the Parish Church to the square.

As well as various stalls there will be Chinese Lion dancers, Irish dancers, the Samba band and other musical acts.

Another crowd favourite is the Wath Morris men who were instrumental in setting up the Wath festival in its early days.

Tomorrow morning's events will include the traditional bread bun throwing from the top of the church tower.

The activity was reinstated several years ago, having originally been started by Thomas Tuke, who, when he died in 1810, left a bequest to the pool for 40 dozen penny loaves to be thrown from the church roof.

Tomorrow night a rock concert will be held at Wath Rugby Club on Moor Road.

Festivities will continue throughout the Bank Holiday weekend focusing on folk music but there is also a Wath's Got Talent competition running throughout.
