A FRANCISCAN friar spent the weekend in Grimethorpe getting to know the community after being invited by the parish priest.

Brother Paschal, who has been a friend of Fr Peter Needham's for over 35 years, arrived last Friday and answered questions from about 30 parishioners during an Italian evening.

Fr Peter said: "It was a very good weekend and there was a good turn out. Brother Paschal's treatment by the community was wonderful."

Originally from Scotland, Brother Paschal joined the Anglican Society of St Francis in 1977 and after his noviciate and profession served in Belfast during the troubles and in Africa and Liverpool.

In recent years he has been the Guardian of the Friary at Alnmouth and is now at the Shrine in Walsingham.

Brother Paschal preached at services in the village over the weekend.
