A PAIR of thieves who travelled from Birmingham to steal £1,000 of antiques from Elsecar Heritage Centre have been jailed for up to two years.
Joseph Hansard and Theresa Iris Gauntlett from Warstock, Birmingham stole a 19th century glass bottle and ceramic items from BBR Auctions in March last year.
The pair were caught out when a member of staff saw the missing bottle up for sale in an auction house in Birmingham.
Enquiries at the auction house found Gauntlett was the person selling the goods, while Hansard was picked out in an identity parade by sales staff.
The two also faced charges of stealing £12,000 of jewellery from Bury St Edmunds and pleaded guilty to that charge, asking the Elsecar theft to be taken into consideration. Gauntlett was sentenced to 16 months while Hansard got 21 months.Â
PC Phil Dunk of Barnsley Police said he was happy with the result.
"They stole goods that were worth a considerable amount of money, with no thought of who the property belonged to or what the consequences would be."
