REGULARS at a town centre pub have come up with a nutty way of beating the 'health and safety brigade' - they're holding an 'illegal' conkers competition.
Drinkers at Wellington Street boozer, Retro, said they were fed up with killjoy officials telling them what they can't do so planned the contest.
Unemployed David Wood, 57, of St George's Road, came up with the idea and hopes Barnsley goes bonkers for conkers. He said: "We were chatting about what you can do and what you can't.
"It's all a good laugh but we are having a dig at health and safety as well because they have banned conkers. We're going to have an 'illegal' competition."
But contestants will have to wear a hard hat and goggles and it is hoped somebody from St John ambulance service will be able to attend.
The contest will be held on Monday, September 28, starting at about 2pm. Entry fees will go to Barnsley Hospice.
