A THURNSCOE school is thought to be the first in South Yorkshire to try a 21st century version of a traditional Scottish pastime.

New Age Kurling has hit the mark with pupils at Gooseacre Primary who have been playing the game since they returned to school following the summer break.

It is a modern take on curling which dates back to the 1500s and was played on ice and involved sliding granite stone towards a target.

Now it can be done indoors on any smooth surface and has been introduced to the school by Scottish PE co-ordinator Alex Barclay who originally hails from Dumfries.

He said: "Before I was a teacher I was a leisure attendant and used to do it then and it is a big Scottish tradition. My grandparents used to do it in the 1950s, it was a big thing.

"I saw it advertised in a catalogue and thought I would have a go at it again. A lot of clubs I organised last year like football got rained off so as an indoor game it is ideal."
