BARNSLEY is highly vulnerable to job losses because public spending will be slashed by the next government, it is forecast.
More than a third — 34.9 per cent — of the borough's jobs are in the public sector and analysts at the independent Centre for Cities claim up to 1,200 of them could go by 2011.
An additional effect of that would be the loss of a further 400 jobs in the private sector, because spending power in Barnsley would drop.
Barnsley Council's head of communications, Bob Williams, dismissed the report as unhelpful.
