AN application to temporarily relocate Barnsley Markets was put into the planning department this week.
The move is still about 18 months off but council officers want to secure the necessary sites before work starts on the £200m Barnsley Markets project.
It is expected that traders will be based on Peel Square, Queen Street, May Day Green, the Metropolitan Centre, Cheapside and New Street for about three years.
In the meantime the council is planning a campaign to encourage shoppers to the town centre.
There is concern that trade is being affected by disruptive building works and the attraction of neighbouring town centres.
A number of ideas have been put forward to try to boost the flagging image of Barnsley as a shopping area, including special events and improved tourist information.
Shoppers will also be given occasional free treats such as chocolate and ice cream.
