COUNCIL leader Steve Houghton will be thrown in jail next month - and members of the public can pay to keep him there.

He is one of a group of the town’s dignitaries taking part in a charity stunt behind bars. They'll stay there until they can raise enough ‘bail’ money - with all proceeds going to Barnsley Hospice.

MP Eric Illsley and Hospice chief executive Lorraine Turner will also be part of the group, who will be ‘arrested’ on Saturday September 23, taken to Barnsley Magistrates Court and sentenced after a hearing.

They will then be given a mobile and a phone book in order to raise the £1,000 necessary to bail themselves out.

In an added twist, members of the public can pledge money to keep the ‘criminals’ behind bars.
