A DELIGHTFUL photograph shows pretty Doris Robinson who was crowned the first Miss Ward Green in 1950.
Doris, who lived all her life in Darley Avenue, Ward Green, was 18. The ceremony was held in playing fields off Highstone Lane.
It was the highlight of a splendid traditional gala day for the residents of Ward Green, Worsb-rough and surrounding areas. The pretty dresses worn by Doris and her attendants were designed and made by Esther Beckett, a member of the gala committee.
A letter written to Doris from Ward Green Community Association president, George Roebuck, after the ceremony said: “I want to congratulate you on the way you fulfilled your office at the gala on Saturday.
“I was struck by your beauty and bearing and you won the good wishes of the people who attended. You carried out your duties with a quiet unassuming dignity. I was proud to be associated with you.â€
Worsbrough councillor, Gill Carr, told Memories: “I lived near Doris and she was a lovely looking girl. It was a wonderful day for everyone who was there.â€
Do any of our readers recognise any of the attendants on the photograph? Doris, who was married to Bernard Platts and had a son, Mark, died last month. Mr Platts told the Chronicle: “She was very proud of being Miss Ward Green. It was something she remembered with fondness all her life.â€
Doris worked at Frank Bird’s Men’s Outfitters on Eldon Street from the age of 17 until she finished working in her 30s.
