THERE were fears last night that up to 1,000 Barnsley Council workers could lose their jobs.

It follows cuts announced in chancellor George Osborne’s emergency budget.

Finance director Steve Pick said council spending is to be slashed by about £40m over the next four years.

Council leader Steve Houghton slammed the budget he said ‘hits the poor harder than the rich, the north more than the south’.
