The number of desperate people calling the Samaritans helpline has increased because of the difficult economic climate.

 

An increase in unemployment, lack of job prospects and increased pressure on the cost of living is prompting more to contact the service.

 

Chairman Susan Wareham said: "Unemployment is high in Barnsley at the minute and a lot of the calls we receive are due to distress caused by the recession."
