The only shop in Notton is facing closure because not enough people are using it regularly.

Manager David Tranter said the shop was not making enough money to survive. “We have a loyal band of customers but it’s the rest we need to get through the doors. If everyone spent £5 a week in the shop, we’d be healthy as there are about 400 houses in the village,” he said.

The shop and post office is owned by villagers after a board of directors fought to save it several years ago. David said the impact of the shop closing would be ‘terrible’.

He added: “I know it’s a cliché to say it but it’s the heart of the village. People come in for a catch-up. All that would be left is the village hall.”
