Barnsley midfielder Jacob Butterfield has been fined £750 after admitting being over the drink-drive limit.

Butterfield, 20, has also been fined two weeks of wages by Barnsley Football Club, he told Barnsley Magistrates’ Court. In a typed letter of mitigation, Butterfield described himself as a role model for young people.

Butterfield said: “I am an athlete and I should not have been drinking in the first place. I thought I would be OK and that I had sobered up. Obviously, I hadn’t.”

Jayne Ormrod, prosecuting, said Butterfield had been drinking at the Holiday Inn and was arrested at McDonalds on old Mill Lane. District Judge Michael Rosenberg said Butterfield had made ‘a huge mistake’.
