Grimethorpe priest Peter Needham is walking from York to his home parish - bearing a 27lb cross.
Fr Peter left Grimethorpe at about 6am to attend a service at York Minister before setting off on the 40 mile journey.
He said he was looking forward to the walk, which will raise money for toilets at St Paul's in Brierley and a community hall at St Luke's in Grimethorpe. But he added: "I just want to get it done now."
Fr Peter is walking with church warden Mike Mowbray.
