A senior police officer has apologised to a man who was scalded when a custody officer threw almost boiling water on him.

Civilian employee Adrian Law tossed the water at Abdul Alfadley leaving him with blistering to his abdomen and genitals. He was jailed for three years after a jury found him guilty of causing grievous bodily harm.

Following the conviction deputy chief constable Bob Dyson apologised to Mr Alfadley. He said: “The actions of Adrian Law on that day fell far below the standards that we expect from our staff in the custody suites, who owe a duty of care to those being detained. Mr Law let down the public and let down his colleagues.

“On behalf of the force I apologise to Mr Abdul Alfadley for the injuries he received.”

Jurors at Leeds Crown Court had been told Mr Alfadley had been arrested in connection with public disorder on Wellington Street in May last year. He was strip-searched and left in a cell wearing his boxer shorts.

The court was told he was a disruptive and defiant prisoner. Jurors were shown a cctv video of Law walking to a kitchen with a cup before standing in front of the cell where Mr Alfadley was detained. He stuck his arm through a hatch and threw the water.
