Dozens of lecturers formed a picket line outside Barnsley College in protest over job cuts.
Staff from affected departments including health and beauty, psychology, English, and Spanish walked out of lessons on Friday morning.
They were joined by students opposed to the axing of lecturers to save between 20-30 per cent of the college budget over four years.
Psychology lecturer Diane Capper, who has lost her job, said staff were 'gutted'.
"We are absolutely devastated. A lot of us are from Barnsley and even went to college here. Now it feels like we've been thrown away."
A spokesman for the college said it was too early to comment on the impact of the strike.
