The parents of an eight-year-old from Mexborough who died after falling into a Swinton Canal have spoken of their devastation.
Matthew Cartwright, eight, of Windhill Terrace, Mexborough, fell into the water at about 5.10pm on Monday and died in Sheffield Children's Hospital on Tuesday.
His family today released a statement saying: "We are devastated at the death of Matthew, which was a tragic accident.
"He was a beautiful, loving little boy and we miss him terribly." Emergency services were called to the canal off Talbot Street in Swinton. Once found and removed from the canal, Matthew was flown to Rotherham Hospital by police helicopter.
But he died on Tuesday at Sheffield children's hospital, with his family by his side. Matthew was with a family member at the time of the incident.Officers do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances and believe it to be a tragic accident. A post mortem will now be carried out.
