Police Tweets about crime could become commonplace if tomorrow’s 12-hour Twitterthon proves popular with the public.
Calls and incidents will be logged on the social networking site to show the demands police face in a day.
Chf Supt Andy Brooke said he would use the experiment to see if it worth regularly using as a method of communicating with the public.
"We’re basically dipping our toe in the social networks to see if it’s something worth doing," he said.
"People presume they know what police do but this will be a way of showing them. There are risks associated with us doing it. Will we say something inappropriate or divulge something we shouldn’t? Probably, but this is about trying new things."
Police working at Barnsley FC’s match with Leicester FC, officers covering the cells at Barnsley police stations and general police calls, will provide regular updates.
