Scott Wiseman is set to retain his place at right-back for Saturday's clash at Cardiff City – and is thrilled to be playing his part for the Reds in the Championship.

Wiseman, who followed Keith Hill and Dave Flitcroft from Rochdale in the summer, replaced the injured Bobby Hassell in Barnsley's starting line-up against Burnley on Tuesday, and helped the team record a clean sheet in a deserved 2-0 success. He also started the move which led to Ricardo Vaz Te's killer second goal.

He told the Chronicle: "I thought it was a great win and just reward for our efforts. The gaffer had said that if we lose one game then we don't lose two on the bounce.

"We had been beaten at Portsmouth so we were determined to get back on track against Burnley. We know that if we keep clean sheets then we have a good chance of getting all three points and we were solid on Tuesday night, which laid the platform for the lads to do their stuff further forward.

"I am learning such a lot from the likes of Bobby [Hassell], Stephen Foster and Rob Edwards. I played the first game of the season at Nottingham Forest but then had a bit of an indifferent patch and found myself out of the side. I played in the goalless draw at Millwall and then I came back in at Portsmouth when Bobby unfortunately got injured.

"So I am getting game time and I'm just thrilled to be here, playing my part for the team in the Championship. I think I'm improving at this level and it was great to be part of a winning team against Burnley.

"Hopefully we can repeat that performance, and result, at Cardiff this weekend.

"That will be a tough game but we go into every game, home or away, with the intention of keeping things solid at the back and looking to win. As a defender first and foremost I have the mentality of going out onto the pitch to help my team get a clean sheet.

"Of course I played under Keith Hill and Flicker [David Flitcroft] at Rochdale – and followed them here to Oakwell – so I must like playing for them! But I think the other lads who were here last season have now realised just what a good management team they are. And they are a team, you don't see one without the other!

"They put a lot of trust in you as a player, and have a honest, very open relationship with the squad.

"Keith trusts us, and we trust him. He's a manager who you can have a laugh with, but he's also a gaffer who will listen to you in all seriousness when you have a problem. You might not like what he says in response, mind, but he'll listen! He may even take it on board!

"Flicker is the loud one. He's the one who often barks out the instructions. Keith stands back and takes it all in. He's an inspiration and a wonderful man-manager. They are two top class people.

"We have a bunch of players here, myself included, who want to do well, for ourselves, each other, Keith and Flicker, and the supporters.

"We want to improve, we want to learn and we want to be a success in the Championship.

"I really look forward to the matches – and I can't wait to lock horns with Cardiff at their new stadium on Saturday."
