The man told off by a judge for referring to female court staff as 'love' says he is grateful for being pulled up on his manners.
New district judge John Foster says men appearing before him must refer to all female court staff as ma'am. When Geoff Guest appeared before him last week over a breach of an order, he was asked to confirm his identity by court advisor Pam Bower andwhen he replied 'yes love', was swiftly taken to task by the judge.
Mr Guest, 42, of Pontefract Road, Lundwood, said: "He's taught me a bit of manners, so I don't mind that. "I didn't realise I was saying anything wrong when I said it. It just slipped out. "I didn't mean any disrespect. It's what I always say to anyone if i know their name, 'yes love', 'hello love'.
"But he's right. It will be yes ma'am next time."
Mr Foster said there was a lack of respect in the country, and that courts should maintain 'proper standards'. "Courts are solemn and serious. They are not places for chatty discussions in relaxed surroundings."
