BARNSLEY Woolley Miners were delighted that their young homegrown talents and overseas signings combined for a second win of the ECB Yorkshire Premier South season.

Opener William Chapman, 19, made 91 with 11 fours and three sixes in Barnsley’s 243 for seven at home to Hallam. The visitors were then bowled out for 130 with four wickets each for South African Sean Whitehead and UAE international Jash Gyanani.

Captain Boeta Beukes said: “It was a very good result against another relegation battle team.

“It’s exactly what we’re trying to do.

“We’re giving the young players a chance, and they are stepping up, but we’ve also got experience which is paying off. William has been playing mainly for the second team but took his chance.

“He’s got a bright future and he’s a talented cricketer. He showed his class.

“He came in for Owen Smith who has been playing for Yorkshire 2nd XI, took over his role and performed very well.

“With the ball, we thought we’d made it too easy.

“But that’s when you need the experience of players like Sean and Josh.

“We’re lucky to have them.”

Barnsley won their opening game of the season then lost to Doncaster and Cawthorne before beating Hallam.

They are currently sixth in the league table. Beukes said: “We’re picking up points to move further away from the bottom. Two wins from the first four games is a great platform for us.

“We’ve picked up bonus points even when we’ve lost against good sides.

“It’s so far, so good but we just need to keep going. We’ve got Sheffield Collegiate next. They have been bowled out for 49 then their openers broke the record for the highest partnership of more than 300 so we don’t know what to expect. But they are always a tough team to play against.”

Cawthorne lost by two wickets at Cleethorpes, having posted 186.

Harry Allinson scored 67 then there were three wickets for Matthew Carroll and Mustafa Shinwari.

Cawthorne are seventh, with two wins and two losses so far this season.
