OWEN Smith is hoping to be the latest Barnsley Woolley Miners player to have a long career with Yorkshire after he starred for the county’s second XI.
The 18-year-old, who is from Thurcroft but has come through the youth system at Shaw Lane since he was eight, scored 124 not out off 128 balls in the second innings against Essex, having made 55 in the first innings.
Owen, who joined Yorkshire age ten, told the Chronicle: “I’m really happy with how I played. I put a lot of hard work in for it.
“I just want to build on it now.
“To play for the Yorkshire first team this season would be nice and I am pushing towards a professional contract.
“I just want to play at the highest level. To play for England has been my dream since I was a kid.
“I’ve enjoyed being at Barnsley and I have some great memories with some of the lads I am playing with now in the first team.
“It’s a good club to be at as a junior.”
