Commuters using Barnsley Interchange will have to pay 20p to pee from next week.

Coin operated turnstiles will be installed on Wednesday to 'cover the ongoing cleaning and maintenance of the facilities'.

The turnstiles would also help prevent vandalism, graffiti and damage, said a Transport Executive spokesman.

Director David Young said: "It’s with reluctance we are introducing the charge, but, given pressures on funding, we feel we can’t maintain a high standard of service without charging to use the toilets."

He said there had been few complaints following the introduction of similar turnstiles at Rotherham interchange.

The turnstiles will accept 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p and £1 coins but no change will be given. Machines that change 50p and £1 coins into smaller change will also be installed.
