Campaigners who fought against a nickel processing plant in Dodworth believe 'people power' was responsible for the application being withdrawn.
ELG Haniel Ltd wanted to transform a disused warehouse, at the Fallbank Industrial Estate, into a treatment plant for 10,000 tonnes of contaminated metal a year.
But the company, based at Templeborough, Rotherham, withdrew its application yesterday following a massive public backlash.
June McGow, 52, of Foxmire Grove, Dodworth, led the protests against the project which claimed to be 'the first of its kind in the UK.'
"They are in a multi-billion pound industry but this shows what you can do if you make enough noise and say 'we're not having it," she said.
