A LIVERPOOL-BORN author who lives in Barnsley has released his latest book - and his new home has been fuelling his creativity.

Matthew Jacobson, 52, moved to Barnsley around three years ago, but is best known for being a highly regarded author, who often writes about Liverpool.

His new book, On the Streets I Ran, features his evocative writing alongside interviews with notable Liverpool figures, which help bring the city to life.

He said: “When I was in Liverpool during the pandemic, I started writing interviews with local personalities, alongside intros for these and other pieces of writing.

“I wrote a lot about everyday things but dove deeper into them, for example I didn’t see pavements, I saw poetic pathways.

“One of my best pieces actually just detailed a bus journey, and every stop had a story, it’s just being able to see the poetry in everyday things.”

Matthew’s time in Barnsley had led him to notice many similarities with his home city across the Pennines - something that he wouldn’t be against writing about in the future.

He added: “I see lot’s of similarities in the people from both places, they’re also friendly and welcoming.

“There’s certain places and streets in Barnsley that just appeal to me, there’s something magical about it and it could be my next writing venture to be honest with you.”

Matthew doesn’t plan on a permanent move back to Merseyside anytime soon either - he’s felt welcomed and at home here in South Yorkshire.

He added: “I’m staying here and not going back, don’t get me wrong I love Liverpool, but it’s such a calming, nice way to live for me here.

“The people have been amazing as well, for someone who’s never been here to strike a connection really says something.”
