KELECHI Nwakali has not been involved with Conor Hourihane’s first team squad all summer and his future at Barnsley is unclear.

The Nigerian international midfielder signed a three-year contract with the Reds last summer and played 26 games, but barely featured in the final month of the season under head coach Hourihane.

Nwakali’s return for pre-season was delayed, initially due to a family matter in Nigeria the Chronicle understands, and he has not featured in any of the first team friendlies.

He is thought to have returned to the club but has not been with the first team and is one of the Reds players, along with the likes of Kacper Lopata and Andy Dallas, who could be moved on.

Asked about Nwakali, Hourihane told the Chronicle: “Time will tell. There was a scenario that happened from my point of view. He hasn’t been involved in the squad over the course of pre-season.”
