BARNSLEY Council’s cabinet members approved a £2.42m investment into the Smithies Lane depot at a meeting this week.

The funding package will be used to support a number of schemes.

These include a canteen and shower block heating upgrade, two new staff cabins, a workshop deep clean and six new vehicle lifts.

The transport workshop at the Smithies site will also be rebuilt at a cost of £1.35m the most expensive part of the project.

While the area will also be resurfaced at a cost of £425,000.

Bosses say the investment will help to ensure the depot continues to meet modern standards for health, safety, and operational efficiency.

The plans were approved by cabinet members at a meeting on Wednesday.

Coun James Higginbottom, cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, said: “Smithies Lane Depot is at the heart of our frontline services.

“This investment is about future-proofing the site, supporting our dedicated teams, and ensuring we continue to deliver high-quality services in a safe and sustainable way.

“It’s a clear demonstration of our commitment to the Be Safe Work Safe campaign and to the people who keep Barnsley running every day.”

A spokesperson added: “Smithies Lane Depot has been central to our operations over 50 years and as such requires essential updates to its infrastructure to ensure it is a sustainable and comfortable environment for our employees.
