NO SUBSTITUTE has scored or assisted a goal for Barnsley in the first ten league games of this season.

The only time it has happened at all under head coach Conor Hourihane was when Fabio Jalo set up Jon Lewis’ late equaliser against Cambridge late last season. In contrast, Neill Collins’ substitutes contributed the most goals and assists in the division in the 2023/24 season, with 25, and Michael Duff’s the second most the season before with 21.

Hourihane has had very limited depth in forward positions after the Reds missed out on signings towards the end of the summer transfer window.

His only two senior strikers are Davis Keillor-Dunn and David McGoldrick, who both started every league game this season until McGoldrick was on the bench on Saturday at Wycombe but did not play due to a groin injury.

Barnsley have made the fewest substitutions in the division this season with 34.

Their most used substitutes in the league are Jon Russell, who has come on eight times, and Neil Farrugia who has been brought off the bench on seven occasions. Neither player has started a league game this season and they are being used in a variety of different positions during their cameos.

The League One team with the most goals by substitutes this season are big-spending Huddersfield, with eight and six assists, while second on the list are Mansfield with six goals and three assists off the bench.

Going into this weekend, Doncaster and Northampton are the other League One sides who have not had any goals or assists from substitutes this season.
