A GREENGROCER whose stall has been serving Penistone for the last 70 years says it will be emotional when he closes in the area for the final time later this month.

Steve Price, 72, from Hood Green, is well-known across the borough for his work as a greengrocer under the guise of E B Price and Son.

He reckons he’s served three generations of locals in Penistone over the years and says a lot of them are like family - but he’s taken the decision to close his stall later this month.

Steve currently works on Penistone Market one day a week but he’ll continue working in Barnsley Market for the other six.

He said: “We’ve been greengrocers in Barnsley and Penistone for nearly 70 years.

“It’s always been an early start at Penistone - I get there at 3.30am.

“As you get a little bit older my capabilities are not what they used to be.

“It’s a little bit emotional because I would say that 90 per cent of my customers come week-in week-out.

“I see more of the customers at Penistone than I do my family.

“We all know each other, and it will be very sad to leave, actually.

“We’ve served probably three generations, like grandma, daughter and their daughter as well so it will be sad, but I’m not retiring completely.”
