A FILM detailing the stories about the old ‘Barebones’ district of Barnsley will be shown across the town over the coming weeks.

The Housing, Town Planning Act of 1919 at the end of the First World War aimed to solve the huge demand for working-class housing in cities and towns throughout Britain.

Most of Barnsley’s estates were built in the 1930s, just before the Second World War.

The huge tracts of land with hundreds of council houses were built to rehouse the people in the slum areas of the town.

It’s hard to imagine how many people lived in the ‘Barebones’ between Wood Street, Sheffield Road and Park Road.

A project aimed to uncover some of the stories from the area has been created by Dave Cherry - and it will be shown at Buckley Methodist Church on Thursday at 2pm.

It will then be shown again on October 28 at 2pm at the Tin Oyle pub and then on November 11 at 2pm at Barnsley Town Hall.

Dave said: “All proceeds for the Buckley Methodist Church event will go to the church.

“The Tin Oyle and the town hall show proceeds will be donated to the Ey Up NHS charity which is a specialist NHS Foundation Trust that provides community, mental health and learning disability services to the people of Barnsley.”
