A COUNCILLOR is leading a campaign to have a pedestrian crossing installed to help youngsters navigate their way to school.

Coun Leyla Nayeri is spearheading the bid having been contacted by residents who are concerned about Darton Lane’s stretch near Darton Primary School.

A Freedom of Information request submitted by Coun Nayeri to the Yorkshire Ambulance Service showed an increase in the number of call-outs each year on this stretch of road.

She told the Chronicle: “This data shows the need to be proactive on this stretch of road to prevent a serious incident.

“A pedestrian crossing would serve as a vital link to allow a safer route not only at school hours but for commuters using the train and bus station and for those walking in our beautiful village.

“Current discussions would have the crossing situated between Oaks Farm Drive and Sackup Lane, close to where the bus shelter is.

“Having a crossing in this location would serve as a visual reminder to drivers to slow down and be at a point where the pavements are at their widest.”

As part of these ongoing discussions, council officers met with the three Lib Dem Darton East councillors at the site to discuss its feasibility.

Coun Nayeri added: “We would like to hear from residents on how important having a crossing would be.

“Please contact me if you would like to support the campaign.”
