THE usually bustling Houghton Main Miners’ Welfare fell quiet on Sunday for a cause that speaks louder than words.
Fundraiser Amy Egley took on a sponsored silence and raised £574 for Weston Park Cancer Charity.
Armed with a donation bucket and a bold sign stating ‘Please Don’t Wind Me Up’, the Middlecliffe woman held her silence throughout the day for a good cause.
She said: “It was harder than I thought - especially with my so-called friends trying to make me crack.
“But every penny raised will help Weston Park be there for families when they need it most.”
Coun Kevin Osborne, who represents the Darfield ward, added: “This was a fantastic effort from Amy.
“I couldn’t have done it.
“The money will make a real difference.”
