CABINET members met this week to discuss the rising costs of Barnsley’s Health on the High Street scheme - with councillors stating ‘good financial management’ had been displayed.

It was revealed last week that the council is anticipated to go over its budget by more than £9m and needs more than £3m to progress to the next stage of design and development of the Alhambra.

Councillors agreed on Wednesday that they were showing ‘good financial management’ and that the money will be prioritised from other projects taking place.

Deputy leader Coun Caroline Makinson said: “It’s good financial management - none of these costs are unexpected in a development of this size.

“We’re leading the way again here in Barnsley.

“Other local authorities across the country are watching what we’re doing with envy.

“I’m sure they’ll be following suit if and when they get the chance.

“It’s not just about health, it’s about the regeneration of our town.”
