THE story of boxing legend Prince Naseem is set to be released in cinemas today - and it’s been written and directed by a Barnsley man.
Giant is inspired by the real-life story of Prince Naseem ‘Naz’ Hamed, a British-Yemeni boxer, and his journey from humble beginnings to becoming a world champion and his training under Brendan Ingle, who played a crucial role in his success.
Hollywood star Pierce Brosnan portrays the role of Ingle.
It’s also executive produced by the legendary Sylvester Stallone.
Barnsley man Rowan Athale is both the director and writer for the blockbuster film.
He made his feature-film debut as both writer and director with the acclaimed heist thriller - The Rise.
Premiering internationally at TIFF, Rowan and the film went on to be nominated for numerous awards, including the Douglas Hickox Award at the BIFA’s, Best Newcomer at the BFI LFF and the Discovery award at TIFF.
He also has writing credits on Wasteland and Gangs of London.
Athale said: “I always had this notion I wanted to make a film about Naz.
“The drama behind the superstar in the ring, that story was just as compelling as what happened in the ring.
“He achieved more than almost anybody and it’s such a tragedy because he could have achieved more.”
