Barnsley will look for a third successive home win when they host struggling Northampton Town from 7.45pm on Tuesday.
The Reds are 15th in League One, five points clear of the relegation zone and 12 off the top six, with this being one of their many games in hand.
They will be without top-scorer Davis Keillor-Dunn who was sold to Wrexham on deadline day on Monday, while it is unclear if the only deadline day arrival Tom Bradshaw joined in time to play.
Kevin Nolan’s Cobblers are second-bottom in League One, two points adrift in the relegation zone and four behind the Reds.
Northampton are winless in eight in the league, losing the last four, and have scored just twice in seven league matches. They lost 2-0 at home to Reading on Saturday.
Conor McCarthy, who joined Northampton last summer after being released by Barnsley, is a regular in the Cobblers defence.
Midfielder Cameron McGeehan, who helped the Reds to promotion in 2019, has recently returned from injury.
Barnsley have a poor record against the Cobblers, winning eight and losing 14 of the 28 meetings. But they are unbeaten in the four games over the last two seasons.
They have won 2-1 at Sixfields in each of the previous campaigns, last season thanks to a Keillor-Dunn double before Mael de Gevigney was sent off.
The home games have been more tricky. Northampton netted an injury-time leveller on the final day of the 2023/24 season which could have denied the Reds a place in the play-offs if not for other results going their way.
The Cobblers then came from 2-0 down to draw in August of last season, which was Conor Hourihane’s final match as a player. Max Watters and Adam Phillips got the goals.
The Reds have not won at home to Northampton in six attempts since 1978, with three draws and three losses.
