A LOCAL woman has made a dramatic career pivot after 14 years.

After years of working as a bakery manager, Jill Charnock decided to swap her apron for scrubs.

Jill joined MHA Mapplewell Manor in February 2018, starting her career with the home as care assistant working nights - eventually progressing to her current role as a senior care assistant.

The care home provides residential dementia care for 87 residents.

Jill was very familiar with the home as a number of her relatives are employed there.

Jill said: “After 14 years in management I fancied a career change and saw the opportunity to work at MHA Mapplewell Manor and decided to give it a go.

“I really enjoy working at MHA Mapplewell Manor and it really is a lovely place to work.

“Part of my role includes doing the medication round, assisting in showering, helping in the dining room and interacting with residents.

“One of my favourite parts of the job is interacting with residents, they are amazing people and I learn so much from them.

“Developing from a care assistant to a senior care assistant was something I was always interested in.

“I was given the support and guidance from management who encouraged me to go for it and I am very happy I did it.

“Working in care is not easy, sometimes you do encounter challenges - but if you are a people person and determined to succeed then you will be just fine.

“I feel the pay doesn’t mirror the work we do, but that is something that is a sector issue and something that I hope will improve with time.

“You can have a very successful career in care if you are prepared to put the work in.

“I have six children and five dogs.

“I managed to juggle bringing them up whilst having a full-time job, so anyone can do it.

“I do feel you need to do your research before progressing, especially on dementia and the challenges that come with those living with it.

“I love the home and everything that comes with it, staff are very supportive of one another and the atmosphere is amazing.”
