BARNSLEY Indoor Market has been named the best large indoor market at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Cementing its position as one of the leading market destinations in the UK, the accolade - given at the NABMA Great British Market Awards 2026 - recognises the market’s offering.

Located at the heart of Barnsley town centre and a central part of the Glass Works, it has been a cornerstone of the town centre since its origins in 1249.

The NABMA judging panel recognised its outstanding achievements in attracting new traders and supporting its established vendors, many of whom have operated at the market for many years.

The market’s popularity as a tourist destination was further highlighted by welcoming over 130 coach trips in 2025, bringing upwards of 4,400 visitors from around the country - 44 more coaches and an extra 1,962 passengers compared to the previous year.

Councillor Robin Franklin, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Barnsley Indoor Market has been recognised - this incredible achievement is a testament to its innovative approach, community engagement and unwavering commitment to supporting local businesses.

It’s wonderful to see Barnsley celebrated as a vibrant, welcoming hub for local businesses and visitors alike.

“Congratulations to all the traders, staff, and supporters who have made this success possible.”
