BARNSLEY has achieved its lowest recorded smoking prevalence.

Figures released by the Barnsley Town Board for January 2026 show figures have reduced from 14.1 per cent to 12.5 per cent in the past year, now ranking as second lowest in South Yorkshire.

A report said: “This improvement reflects sustained delivery of the Make Smoking Invisible programme through the Barnsley Tobacco Control Alliance, combining population-wide prevention with targeted cessation support.

“The approach directly supports reducing smoking in pregnancy, cardiovascular disease and respiratory harm, while addressing wider health inequalities.

“Action includes smoke-free environments, school-based prevention, community engagement and accessible quit support.

“Continued progress contributes to improved life expectancy, reduced long-term demand on health services and Barnsley’s ambition to achieve under five per cent smoking prevalence by 2030.”
