ALMOST £3,000 was raised for Barnsley Hospice during their takeover day at Oakwell on Saturday.

Players donned the hospice shirts before the South Yorkshire derby against Doncaster Rovers, supporting the service which provides care for locals.

It has been revealed that a huge £2,917 was raised by supporters on the day - much to the delight of volunteers.

A hospice spokesperson said: “It’s no secret that many of our staff, patients, supporters and volunteers are huge supporters of the Reds, our relationship with the football club means so much to so many of us at the hospice and our annual takeover day gives us the chance to fundraise and talk with Barnsley supporters about our services.

“On the day, the players warmed up in hospice t-shirts before the match, with the matchday programme turning hospice orange for one day only and it featured information about the hospice inside.

“The generosity of the fans was felt throughout the stadium.

“The club generously donated various raffle prizes which were drawn on the day, and along with our bucket collection, amounted to a total of £2,917.32.

“We really appreciate the incredible support shown from Barnsley Football Club for once again accommodating our takeover day.
