BARNSLEY’S two leading professionals both posted top finishes in races overseas at the weekend.

Hemingfield’s Jenson Young just missed out on a podium at the UCI Gravel World Series race from Elvas in Portugal which finished across the border in Badajoz, Spain.

Young finished just two seconds behind third-placed Lawrence Naesen at the end of a gruelling 137km course.

He was the highest placed Brit in the race and looks to be in strong form for his team Ribble Outliers.

Young said: “The guy that won it got away and it was inevitable. Everyone then was racing for second.

“The group whittled down and I kept making the splits on the technical bits.

“It ended up being a group of four of us. It was an ideal scenario as I was left with my teammate.

“It was a pretty attritional race.

“I launched my sprint early to try and beat Naesen but he was onto me and got third. I knew he had a kick.

“It’s disappointing in one respect but also my best ever result at UCI level – so I am pretty happy with that.”

On the road, Imogen Wolff, from Silkstone Common, earned 17th spot for Team Visma-Lease a bike at the In Flanders Fields race in Belgium.

The result saw her earn 30 UCI points and she was the highest placed finisher on her team and the second Brit in a group 17 seconds behind the race winner.

Wolff also competed in Dwars door Vlaanderen in Belgium on Wednesday finishing a credible 32nd in a top field.
